Book Three Chapters 1-3

"He felt the smash of truncheons of his elbows and iron-shod boots on his shins; he saw himself groveling on the floor, screaming for mercy through broken teeth. He hardly thought of Julia. He could not fix his mind on her. He loved her and would not betray her; but that was only a fact, known as he knew the rules of arithmetic. He felt no love for her, and he hardly even wondered what was happening to her. He thought oftener of O'Brien, with a flickering hopes. O'Brien must know that he had been arrested. The Brotherhood, he had said, never tried to save its members." (Page 229)

This quote from Chapter 1 of Book 3 can be interpreted in many different ways. For me, I decided to focus on how Winston can barely even think about Julia. He was too busy with his aching hunger in his stomach and screaming through his roughed-up mouth. While he claims that he would not betray her as he loved her, he could care less about her. The gruesomeness of the situation he found himself in did not allow him to thinking about things that didn't matter at that point. Maybe, just maybe, Winston knew he was gonna die and knew nobody was going to come to his rescue. He was looking for the only bright side he could think of and hoped his razor blade would save him or a miracle from O'Brien would come. For me personally, I think Winston knew he was never going to leave prison alive. He knew this was the end of the road but tried to focus on other things as long as his other thoughts of his pain permitted him

Book Two Chapters 7-10 of 1984

"He began asking his questions in a low, expressionless voice, as though this were a routine, a sort of catechism, most of whose answers were known to him already.
'You are prepared to give your lives?'
   'Yes.'
   'You are prepared commit murder?'
   'Yes.'
'To commit acts of sabotage which may cause the death of hundreds of innocent people?
   'Yes.'
 ........ (Skipping some questions)
'You are prepared, the two of you, to separate and never see one another again?'
   'No!' broke in Julia."

This quote comes from page 172 (Chp. 8) where O'Brien asks Julia and Winston questions. The quote stuck with me because of how much their relationship has grown, especially for Julia. Julia, being the heart-breaker she is, interrupts Winston's constant answering of the questions and blurts out to the first question that relates to Julia and Winston's relationship. Winston himself answered "No" after he struggled with his thoughts for a moment. From the acts of Rebellion and lust in their relationship arrived a whole new loving relationship for Julia and Winston. While either of them are ready to risk life or limb together, sacrificing their relationship is something neither would be able to live with. If Winston would go through with their plans, their would possible be have to a whole new identity Winston. A new face, voice, and possible missing body parts but as long as they could remain together with the same personalities, they would be fine. Winston and Julia have completely progressed from their acts of solely lust to a relationship of love

Book 2. Chapters 3-6 of 1984

"He notices that she never she used Newspeak words, except the ones that had passed into everyday use. She had never heard of the Brotherhood, and refused to believe in its existence. Any kind of organized revolt against the Party, which was bound to be a failure, struck her as stupid. The clever thing was to break the rules and stay alive all the same." page 131

This quote comes from the description of Julia after a brief description on her first love affair with a party member. Julia's form of rebellion is not the basic sort of martyrdom. Julia had the idea that rebellion is not successful unless you get to see your actions' impact. For Julia, who has affairs with party members, had the men she slept with commit suicide before they could confess to having affairs with her. Julia sees that the Party doesn't want citizens to live life with pleasure. They want it to be simple and bland so Julia takes it on herself to find pleasure the way it could hurt the Party and it's members the most. Have pleasure with them as it goes against their ideals/policies. She rarely accepts what the Party enforces and makes sure she gets what she wants/needs.

Chapters 7-8/Book 2 Chapters 1-2

"Do you know,' he said, 'that until this moment I believed I had murdered my mother?'
'Why did you murder her?' said Julia, almost sleep.
'I didn't murder her. Not physically.'
In the dream he had remembered his last glimpse of his mother, and within a few moments of waking the cluster of small events surrounding it had all come back."

On the topic of dreams and nightmares, this glimpse of Winston's mother his deep. As we talked about how dreams can heal, remember, forget or help us cope with certain things, we can see that Winston's most recent dream of his mother is a a mix of healing and remembering. Up until then, Winston had no idea that he was not the actual murderer of his mother. After his dream, he remembers enough to know he is not the actual murderer but sadly does not know the culprit for her death. This memory also serves as a healing dream for Winston. Winston carried around the burden of the murdering of his mother. As he find out that he didn't actually murder her, that burden on his back slowly eases of his back. Along with the burden on his back, Winston heals with memories of his mother and family. The more his remembers about his family, especially his mother and little sister, he heals as he gains more memories of them.

Chapters 2-6 of 1984

"And this hall, with its fifty workers or thereabouts, was only one sub-section, a single cell, as it were, in the huge complexity of the Records Department. Beyond, above below, were other swarms of workers engaged in an unimaginable multitude of jobs. There were the huge printing shops with their sub-editors, their typography experts, and their elaborately equipped studios for the faking of photographs."
This quote really made me think about past government control, while it is no surprise that 1984 is making me think of previous governments, it still surprises me how much his depiction of previous dictatorships still sounds like he predicted the North Korean dictatorships. His depictions of a fascist government or a government who's control resembles the Nazi regime is almost as he was living in the same era or Kim Jung Un or Fidel Castro with their dictatorships in full effect. Imagine the millions of people who know nothing but the lies their government tells them or the faked images they see... People in North Korea do not even know anything but worshiping Kim Jung Un and life in North Korea. They are fed lies like that North Korea won the World Cup or that their dictator is a divine creature. The Records Department seems like a mirror image of the North Korean government right now.
